"Know and embrace your shadow"

“What are possible after effects of treatment?”

If you have never had a treatment before or if your body is very stressed you may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Tiredness due to release of toxins encouraged by the treatment and the initiation of healing energies – respect your body’s need to rest
  • Muscular ache and/or headaches due to the nerve fibres responding to the deep work undertaken
  • Heightened emotional state due to the positive release of deeply-held feelings and emotions
  • Frequent urination due to stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • Changed sleep patterns - you may also experience unusual or more vivid dreams as unconscious changes take place
  • Active bowels - all body systems, including the digestive one, will work better
  • Spots may occur due to released toxins and hormones surfacing through the skin

These reactions are normal and are positive signs that your body is responding to the treatment as its systems function more efficiently, speeding up waste removal and the elimination of toxins as well as releasing negative deeply held emotions.

With regular treatments and, as a body starts to heal and rebalance, the after effects will subside.

“Who should avoid massage therapy?”

Because massage is given for the purpose of relaxation and support. It is unlikely that your medical condition will disqualify you from receiving it. The strokes will always be within your comfort however, there are several conditions when massage is not advised.

Massage should not be performed at all if you:

  • have infectious skin conditions and diseases (like impetigo)
  • are under influence of alcohol and/or drugs (at least 12h before)
  • have fever and/or flu, or have a temperature
  • don't feel well, are extremely weak or clinically exhausted
  • have a thrombosis or embolism or a recent haemorrhage
  • have incurred a recent head or neck injury

Speak to your doctor first if you suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Heart or circulatory conditions, high or low blood pressure
  • Cancer
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Kidney infections/disorders OR any other ailments of the internal organs
  • Nervous or psychotic conditions, epilepsy
  • AIDS or HIV
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are local conditions where massage would be unsuitable. These areas would be avoided and massage could be performed over the rest of the body. Examples are:

  • Bruising, inflammation, pain, cuts, abrasions, sunburns, scar tissue, tenderness, oedema,
  • allergies/skin sensitivities, excessive sweating, hernia,
  • Recent fractures, strains or sprains
  • Major or minor surgery within the last 18 months
  • Areas of localised contagious skin disorders such as verucca, athletes foot, psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis
  • Varicose veins
  • The abdomen during the first 3 months of pregnancy

Tell your therapist if you have active or swollen arthritis.

How often should I have a massage?”

It depends entirely on you. Some people have one every week, some every month. Treatments also accelerate recovery after injury and so you may need ad hoc sessions. Regular treatments keep your body systems in balance and reduce the chances of illness or injury.

“What if I get aroused?”

Men can get an erection during a full body massage. Sensory transmitters to the brain are just saying, “touch feels good” it doesn’t mean you’re attracted to the person giving you the massage. The important thing is to be comfortable and relax.
